London's air quality website becomes more useful than ever
News from the LAQN

Today, the Environmental Research Group (ERG) at King's College London launches the redesigned London Air Quality Network website. This site increases public availability of air pollution information and raises awareness of pollution issues and the air quality management activities of local councils and the Mayor of London.

The LondonAir site is the prime source of air pollution information for the capital. During pollution incidents, several thousand visitors per day view the latest pollution concentrations which are updated each hour.

The website update was designed following consultations with regular users of the site, and as such, now focuses more on their needs.
In summary:

  • We have redesigned the home page to illustrate what is currently happening. This helps to direct different users to the information they require.
  • Our guide has been revised to adopt an accessible style and incorporate additional information on health and the latest research. Topics now directly address what our users want to know, for example "Should I exercise in London?"
  • We have also incorporated videos for ten important topics, interviewing experts on the subject, and presenting the information in an effective way.
  • A mobile version of the website has been created, allowing people to access air pollution levels at any time and place, which complements our existing smart phone applications.
These revisions improve the already powerful and well used LondonAir web site so that it addresses more directly, the real concerns and needs of the public.

The Air Quality Monitoring Manager, Gary Fuller of King’s College London said, "There is mounting evidence to support the links between air pollution and adverse health effects. Management of air pollution requires action by all levels of Government and by each of us in our daily lives. The LondonAir web site has a vital role in supporting the air quality management initiatives in the capital. We are especially proud of our new guide, and think it will really help people understand the real impact of air pollution on their lives."
