LAQN seminar
News from the LAQN

King’s College London are holding a seminar on 24th April 2009 to discuss topical issues regarding air quality in London.

The morning session will devoted to issues surrounding current trends in both air quality measurements and emission estimates. Emphasis will be paid to the disparity in the measurement and emission trends and possible reasons for these anomalies. Air quality measurements will also be considered in relation to weather conditions, including analysis methods developed to remove the impact of meteorology and seasonal variation when assessing pollutant trends. The morning session will close with an update on the UK’s approach to the issues around NO2 Limit Values and the latest results from health studies being undertaken in London to assess the impact of air quality on school children.

During the afternoon session there will be a brief summary of the research programmes currently being undertaken at King’s College London including long term indoor air and urban CO2 monitoring. The afternoon session will then focus on actions to improve air quality including some examples of how relatively straightforward statistical methods can be used to help identify the effects of local air quality management schemes and other policy interventions on ambient air quality. The experience of a the London Borough of Camden in monitoring PM around a major construction site has been included as an example of how local government can tackle large construction sources. Finally, the experience of campaign groups will be represented by the Campaign for Clean Air in London. The sessions will be chaired by Professors Martin Williams (Defra) and Dick Derwent (rd scientific).

This seminar is free, however, attendance is by invitation only due to limited space. If you wish to attend please contact valentina.lotti@erg.kcl.ac.uk
