Volcanic ash under observation Update

The plume from the Icelandic volcano eruption is forecast to travel south east from Iceland over the North Sea. It is possible that the plume could pass over southern England later today or overnight. However, dry sunny conditions should prevent particulate matter from being transported to ground level. The risk of grounding will increase during the night with a forecast light drizzle, although this remains unlikely given the height and course of the plume.

The Health Protection Agency is advising that the plume of volcanic ash currently trapped in the atmosphere above the United Kingdom is not a significant risk to public health because it is at high altitude.
The UK Met Office released their first advisory showing the predicted distribution of the plume at 14:00.
