King's launch new community pollution exposure website: BreatheLondon.org

On Wednesday 11th March King's will launch a new website as part of a larger 'BreatheLondon' project, which supports 'community-led' research into air pollution exposure and public health protection.

The website’s aim is to provide public health advice and tools to help individuals to reduce the risk of harm from air pollution. It will also allow community groups to propose their own projects, which will be supported with access to personal monitoring equipment and scientific expertise. This 'community-led' approach to pollution research will help King's researchers to develop better methods of encouraging behavioural change to lower exposure and improve public health.

The website will show details of ongoing and past projects allowing participants and the public to learn about the design and results of studies near them. It will also feature tools to help individuals reduce their everyday exposure including choosing low pollution routes to school and work. This new initiative complements the existing LondonAir apps and website and will provide information to support similar initiatives from Local Authorities and other organisations.

Professor Frank Kelly said:
“We want initiatives like BreatheLondon to raise public awareness of the health impacts of air pollution and how they can be minimised, and we hope that our new website will encourage people to adopt patterns of travel that reduce their exposure to air pollution.”

Dr Ben Barratt, BreatheLondon project lead added:
“This new website, along with our air pollution apps, CityAir and LondonAir, give people access to information on what they are breathing as they move around the city. We hope more people, particularly those with respiratory conditions like asthma, will make use of this new site to help reduce the effects of air pollution on their health.”

Places for the evening launch event are available. If you'd like to attend, please contact Diana Silva diana.silva@kcl.ac.uk to register.
