The City of Westminster monitoring site on Oxford Street has been integrated into the LAQN from the start of 2011.
Oxford Street provides many interesting aspects as an exposure assessment location. The population exposure is large as it is Europe’s busiest shopping street. The traffic restrictions mean that only buses and taxis are allowed to travel along the road, the emissions are therefore virtually 100% diesel. The importance of this location is reflected in a recent study which contrasted the short term health effects of exposure on mild and moderate asthmatics along Oxford Street and Hyde Park (See BBC website).
The site uses a Partisol sampler to collect PM10 onto filters which are subsequently weighed at the laboratory. This provides measurements which are equivalent to the EU reference method. Unfortunately they are not available immediately due to the delay between sampling and analysis, we expect a delay of approximately 4 weeks.
