First results of WHO review of air pollution health effects
News from the LAQN

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has released the first results of their review of evidence on health aspects of air pollution. The report answers 22 questions relevant to the review of European air pollution policies and addressing the health aspects of these policies. The answers were developed by a large group of scientists engaged in the WHO’s "Review of evidence on health aspects of air pollution - REVIHAAP" including Professor Ross Anderson, Professor Frank Kelly, Professor Martin Williams, Professor David Phillips, Dr Heather Walton and Dr Ian Mudway from King’s.

The review concluded that considerable new scientific information is now available on health effects of particulate matter, ozone and nitrogen dioxide at levels commonly found in Europe, that this new evidence supports the scientific conclusions of the 2005 WHO Air Quality Guidelines and indicates that adverse health effects can occur at air pollution concentrations lower than the 2005 Guideline values. The report also provides scientific arguments for decisive actions to improve air quality and reduce the burden of disease associated with air pollution in Europe.
