A new urban background air quality monitoring site has been installed in Victoria Park by Tower Hamlets Council, measuring PM10 particulate, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and sulphur dioxide.

The cabin, located towards the eastern end of Victoria Park is less than 1km west of the Olympic Park. It will provide vital information on pollution levels experienced by athletes and spectators as events get fully underway in the Olympic stadium next week. Victoria Park itself is also expected to have many extra visitors during the Games as viewing screens have been set up to show live sporting events.

In the longer term the site will give a useful indication of background pollution levels in this rapidly developing part of London.

This is the fourth new site to open as part of the LAQN in the run up to the Olympic Games; a time when London’s air quality is under the international spotlight.
