The 2014 Sustainable City Awards were presented last week at a glittering ceremony at the Guildhall.
This year the award for air quality went to Nomura International plc for its support of the CityAir initiative. Nomura have embarked on a programme to improve local air quality on one of the most polluted roads in the City of London. Their comprehensive programme included the fitting of a green roof, overhaul of boilers and a programme to encourage staff to cycle or walk rather than use taxis. Inspired by their success in the City, Nomura has embarked on a project to measure air pollution emissions produced by its activities across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Two runners up prizes were awarded this year:
Bradford City Council impressed the judges with their integrated air quality action plan, which has shaped their innovative and highly effective approach to tackling air pollutants. From engagement with the private sector to overhaul of the council vehicle fleet, Bradford has boosted the uptake of electric vehicles, and pioneered the development of the first Low Emissions zone outside of London;
The second runners up award went to Get More Bikes, who are training young people as bicycle mechanics, recycling old bicycles and encouraging sustainable travel. Last year, a small pocket of funding allowed them to purchase cargo bikes and gazebos, which enabled them to expand their Mobile Mechanics Services to an even wider audience.
The Sustainable City awards scheme is run by the City of London. The air quality category is supported King’s College London and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.
