London Borough of Sutton has installed a new monitoring site, Sutton 6, in the Worcester Park area of the borough. The monitoring equipment, which comprises an oxides of nitrogen analyser and a PM10 Particulate FDMS, was successfully commissioned on 4th November 2008.
The site is adjacent to the section of the A2043 Central Road which passes through the Worcester Park shopping parade. The parade attracts many pedestrians and there are first-floor residential properties above the shops. The site was carefully positioned to avoid obscuring shop façades or encroaching upon areas of local amenity - a considerable challenge in an area such as Worcester Park where there is a high density of small commercial premises and numerous public seating areas.
Sutton 6 is an important addition to the local authority’s air pollution monitoring programme which already includes measurements from well-established sites in Carshalton, Wallington and Beddington Lane. On a wider scale, the site increases the LAQN’s coverage in south west London where measurements are relatively sparse.
