New website for Sussex airAlert warning service
News from the LAQN

The airAlert service for Sussex has a new website created by ERG that allows users to register for air quality forecast alerts online. This new service will make the whole system even more accessible, and thus hopes to help more people manage their health.

airAlert is a service, provided for the Sussex Air Quality Partnership (Sussex-air), that sends free messages direct to vulnerable people informing them about air pollution levels in their area. airAlert is targeted at people with respiratory health problems who may be affected by air pollution. It warns people the day before or on the day that elevated air pollution is expected to occur. airAlert sends a voice or text message direct to you (via your mobile or home telephone, email or via webpages or RSS on your PC).

People can register for free, then login for updates, changes, suspend/go on holiday or cancel the service. The new airAlert service started on the 1st May 2008 enabling people to register before the official launch in early June, and will operate through out the year.

The head of the ERG monitoring team, Gary Fuller, said "We are really pleased with our new website - it uses many cutting-edge technologies to make sure the site works well, is easy to use, accessible and secure. We believe the site will increase the number of susceptible people getting the benefit of our air quality forecasts."

The airAlert service has run for the previous two years as a pilot and has been very sucessful. An independent study of the pilot service by the University of Brighton found that 67% of subscribers modified their behavious as the result of Alerts, and comments included "airAlert has made me feel much more in control....somebody actually rings me up.. it's given me more confidence.".
