NERC Schools PM Research

Sampling has just finished in a joint particle characterisation study between King’s College London and University of Birmingham .

The study involved the deployment of additional monitoring equipment at 7 LAQN sites across 6 London boroughs. The NERC funded study is a pilot project to look at the composition and toxicity of particulate matter.

Routine measurements of PM10 particulate will be compared with the mass and toxicity of various size fractions of particulate, as well as measurements of particle count and surface area.

Results for this pilot phase will inform the format for the next phase of the study will involve longer deployments at the monitoring sites, all of which are in or near primary schools, combined with a health study of the pupils at the schools over a number of years.
