Indoor air-monitoring project
News from the LAQN

King’s College London has just started an important indoor air-monitoring project. The aim is to carry out long-term continuous monitoring of gaseous pollutants at adjacent internal and external sampling points to determine the exposure of building occupants to external pollutants.

Two study buildings with existing monitoring stations were identified and space for equipment has kindly been donated the London Borough of Greenwich and The City of London Corporation.

Location 1 - Greenwich Environmental Curriculum Centre, Greenwich (Greenwich 4)

  • A naturally ventilated school building in an urban background location.
  • Comparing Indoor / outdoor levels of NO2 and O3.
  • Indoor measurements will be made inside a frequently used classroom.

Location 2 - Offices at Walbrook Wharf, The City of London Corporation (The City of London Corporation 6)
  • A mechanically ventilated office building in a busy roadside location.
  • Comparing Indoor / outdoor levels of NO2.
  • Indoor measurements will be made in the ground floor lobby.

Using two existing outdoor air monitoring stations, similar equipment, and LAQN QA/QC for both indoor and outdoor meaurements, we will be able to assess the effects of meteorology and building activity on the transfer of air pollutants into buildings and the likely health implications for the building occupants.

The project is funded by ERG’s research and development fund.
