The Environmental Research Group (ERG) at King’s College London have today launched an iPhone/iPod touch application
which allows people to access air quality readings from across London while on the move.
The application was designed and developed by the monitoring team at ERG and represents a first step
in the provision of real-time air pollution measurements on mobile devices.
The application uses the iPhone's intuitive touch screen and the familiar iPod menu system to allow users to
navigate to any site in the London air quality network in three taps.
Professor Frank Kelly, Director of ERG underlined the importance of the new system, "the provision of air pollution information
has an important role to play in public awareness of the link between poor air quality and adverse health effects. Using this application
people can easily access air pollution information wherever they are. We hope that
those people whose health is affected by air pollution will use this service to better manage their symptoms."
The iPhone application adds to the air quality measurements published hourly on the LondonAir web site (www.londonair.org.uk).
ERG will continue to extend the capabilities of the iPhone application adding in
push notifications for pollution events, location awareness features, map views and graphs.
The application is available now for free through iTunes at www.itunes.com/apps/londonair
and has already been downloaded by over 100 users.
Please contact Andrew Grieve in the ERG monitoring team (andrew.grieve@erg.kcl.ac.uk)
if you have any questions or if you'd like to embed a link to the application in your website.
