Air Quality In London 2005 and mid 2006 – Provisional Analysis

A summary of provisional measurements of air quality in London during 2005 and up to the middle of 2006 is now available on the LondonAir web site.

Almost all road and kerbside monitoring sites exceeded the annual mean Air Quality Strategy Objective (AQS) for NO2. Evidence points to an increase in annual mean NO2 in the 12 months ended June 2006 when compared with 2005. Eleven sites also exceeded the hourly mean AQS Objective for NO2. This is in marked contrast to 2002 when this Objective was only exceeded at one site and provides further evidence of the consequences of increased emissions of primary NO2.

The PM10 AQS Objective (also the EU Limit Value) was exceeded alongside major roads in London and at sites on residential roads near waste transfer sites. The majority of monitoring sites measured increases in PM10 concentrations during the year ended June 2006 when compared with 2005. Notable increases were measured at the roadside sites Kensington & Chelsea 2 (Cromwell Road), Camden 1 (Swiss Cottage) and Marylebone Road.

Almost all background sites exceeded the AQS O3 objective.

The AQS Objectives for CO and SO2 were met at all London Air Quality Network sites.
