Diffusive Sampling and Other Low Cost Monitoring Techniques

The Royal Society of Chemistry’s automation and analytical measurement group are organising an international conference on diffusive and low cost methods to measure air pollution. The role of diffusive techniques in the assessment of air pollution has changed dramatically in recent years.

With the development of the EU Air Quality Directive, the Daughter Directives and the recent Directive on ‘Ambient Air Quality and Cleaner Air for Europe’, the importance of the diffusive sampling has been further recognised and widely implemented. Although formerly mostly used in the workplace, the diffusive techniques are now being used for ambient air and indoor air monitoring and personal exposure assessment.

This monitoring approach is being enhanced by other low cost methods, including new sensors and miniature instrumentation. The three day conference, on 15th to 17th September in Krakow, offers a good opportunity to bring together scientists, air quality managers and manufacturers, to exchange experiences and thoughts about the new applications.
