First High Ozone of 2012

On Monday 28 May, ‘high’ ozone, as defined by the new Daily Air Quality Index(DAQI), was measured at the London Air Quality Network site in Sevenoaks, Kent. This followed a day of photochemical pollution, caused by strong sunlight driving chemical reactions between pollutants in the atmosphere, and is the first time that ‘high’ ozone has been measured in the south east this year.

The predictive triggers in the new DAQI operated correctly, and provided four hours advance warning before high pollution exposure was reached. Gary Fuller of King’s College said, "The ability of the new index to correctly predict high ozone exposure is a major step forward in public information, allowing us to provide advance warning to vulnerable people via our smartphone and web applications. This demonstrates the clear benefits of the full implementation of Defra’s new index."

The health impacts of such pollution episodes is just one of the topics that will be featured at this year’s London Air Quality Network Seminar on the 28th June. Full details will be published shortly.
