There have been many reports in the media concerning a volcanic eruption in Iceland causing disruption to flights due to dust in the atmosphere this morning (15th April 2010). Volcanic eruptions produce extremely hot particle emissions, which are able to push high up into the atmosphere; current reports suggest that the main dust cloud is at a height of 17km.
While it is unlikely that these emissions will be brought down to ground level over the UK, we are regularly checking our measurements for evidence of an effect of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations. We will update our news items as necessary should we find any such evidence.
