London Air Quality Network annual report 2016
News from the LAQN

The 2016 London Air Quality Network annual report has now been published. This report details the results of air pollution measurements made on the London Air Quality Network during 2016, presented with specific reference to the UK Air Quality Strategy (AQS) Objectives and the EU Limit Values. This gives local authorities and others a chance to see the measurements in context with other network sites and to get an overall picture of how London is progressing towards attainment of these objectives. The London Air Quality Network (LAQN) is a unique resource, providing robust air pollution measurements that are essential to underpin air quality management and health studies.

This year’s report shows that London is still a long way from attaining certain objectives. More than half of the sites with sufficient data capture failed to meet the NO2 annual mean objective of 40 µgm-3 with 11 sites recording an annual mean of twice the legal limit or above. Around a quarter of sites exceeded the NO2 hourly mean objective. Five sites exceeded the PM10 daily mean objective of no more than 35 days with a daily mean greater than 50 µgm -3. Several of the sites exceeding the PM10 objective were affected by local construction or waste management activities.
